Recently, I had the pleasure of serving as a judge for the McHenry County Fair's 4-H Visual Arts, Chalk, Carbon, and Pigment competition. It was a rewarding experience to spend time with so many young artists who were eager to share not only their artwork, but also the ideas and processes behind it.
What impressed me most wasn't simply the quality of the work—though it was remarkably strong—but the curiosity and enthusiasm each student brought to the conversation. As judges, we met individually with the participants, who spoke about what inspired them, why they chose their subjects, and how they approached creating their pieces. Hearing them articulate their creative decisions reminded me that making art is as much about learning to see and think as it is about mastering technique.
The range of exploration on display was encouraging. Every artist approached the challenge differently, and each work reflected a unique perspective. Seeing that willingness to experiment and express oneself is a reminder of why supporting young artists matters so much.
It was an honor to be part of the experience, and I left feeling optimistic about the next generation of creative voices.
